StreamUnlimited

  • History

The nucleus of StreamUnlimited originated in 2000, when Philips Audio acquired the engineering team of ReQuest Multimedia, the US startup company that created the first MP3/Hard disc Jukebox on the market.

The former ReQuest crew and a small group of disc/storage experts of Philips Audio in Vienna, formed a dynamic new development team. The new team combined high-innovation power with the ability to develop modules and products for low cost, high volume manufacturing.

It all started with the development of a module for streaming audio files from both the Internet and the PC. This module eventually became part of the MC-i200, the world's first audio set with multiple Internet audio services and PC-link. The new concept was called Streamium.

While the MC-i200 still required a wired network connection, its successor, the MC-i250, streamed data via a wireless network connection. The new model included a vast number of new features and innovations, including Internet upgrade-ability; a new user interface concept, a formerly unknown system architecture using Web server and PC software; life cycle management; and personalized user settings.

Meanwhile, the team had moved forward to the next big step: a streaming platform for picture and video files on top of audio from both the Internet and the PC. This audio/video streaming module, was the first of its kind in consumer electronics history.

This Audio/ Video streaming module the team applied in SL300i, Sl400i (digital media adapters) and MX6000i (streaming video, home theatre, 5 disc DVD player)

In the fall of 2004, Philips refocussed on Medical Systems and its Asia activities. That's when the current management team of StreamUnlimited founded the new company, starting with 25 people of the old Philips crew.
